SCWO

What is it?

Treatment of Hard COD based on supercritical water oxidation. The reactor is heated above 374°C and 221 bar which results in changed properties of water. At this state inorganic salts precipitate from the water and are concentrated as brine. Heavy metals can be further precipitated from the brine and the final sludge is landfilled. The salt-free supercritical wastewater is then further heated to 450-550°C for complete organic destruction (e.g. pharmaceutical residues, PFOS etc.). The process operates continuously or in batch mode. To reduce energy consumption of 50-60 kWh/m3 for heating and compressors, energy is reused. The full-scale unit treats 4.8 m3/d. Whether pre-treatment is required depends on the concentration of salts (Ca, Mg) that can cause scaling. For example, wastewater from pharmaceutical industry is concentrated by 20 times before entering the SCWO process.
